3D avatar fashion with Frenzoo

Currently in closed alpha, Hong-Kong based Frenzoo is aiming for the popular (primarily) girls market across Asia Pacific (initially), or as they put it ‘3D fashion and lifestyle for everyone’.

As Techcrunch reported back in May 2007, co-founding Skype engineers participated in the Series A funding round.

Three real world brands are already signed up for the Frenzoo launch, namely Liucia (women’s shoes), Dusty (men’s fashion) and MayMayKing (handbags).

The K Zero case study on Luxury Brands gives marketers in these sectors a great insight into the virtual worlds space.

Some sample imagery is shown below for Frenzoo – maybe one to add to the list…..

Rocketon intro video

Videos / Machinima

Billed as a parallel world, Rocketon is currently in closed alpha testing. The video below provides a good overview of the platform – basically avatar interaction and casual gaming is placed as a layer on top of a webpage. Further functionality is provided with a dedicated virtual currency, used to buy avatar accessories. It’s a similar proposition to Weblin, although with a few more features. The Weblin video is also shown for comparison.

Updated: Competitive rivalry in virtual worlds. Part 2/5 – The power of suppliers

Strategic Marketing

What role do suppliers of virtual world services play in terms of influencing the level of competition in the metaverse sector? Using the Porter’s Five Forces strategic framework, it is possible to identify the supplier-related factors and then suggest appropriate methods for virtual world operators to manage their power and influence.

Firstly, who are the suppliers to virtual worlds and what do they supply? This is obviously by no means an exhaustive list.

  • Graphic artists/designers
  • General programmers/developers
  • User experience specialists
  • Community managers
  • Marketing agencies
  • ISP’s
  • Server companies
  • E-commerce/payment gateways/billing
  • Metaverse strategists

On an overall basis, supplier power is high if there’s a limited number of vendors and virtual world operators are highly reliant on their services. These are the elements influencing the bargaining power of suppliers… Continue reading →

Incentivising P2P virtual worlds

Uncategorized

I don’t tend to stray too far into the technical or back-end aspects of virtual worlds because, well, I’m not that clever, but reading about developments in peer-to-peer virtual worlds got me thinking.

P2P virtual worlds make a lot of sense. After all, a major direct cost associated with managing a base of active virtual world members is server costs. These ‘farms’ are typically centralised close to the HQ’s of the operators and rise in attributing cost as the overall base of active grows.

So, the problem for virtual world operators in this scenario is that they have to pay to allow non-paying members to access the world. Now sure, this comes with the territory of running any type of online business model focused on user bases but it should really focus the operators on developing CRM programmes to convert non-paying into paying subs. Easy said that done of course.
